Nutella Puff Pastry Trees (Printable)

Golden puff pastry layered with smooth Nutella, shaped into festive tree forms for holiday joy.

# What You Need:

→ Pastry

01 - 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed if frozen (approximately 8.8 oz each)

→ Filling

02 - 4.2 oz Nutella or chocolate-hazelnut spread

→ Finish

03 - 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
04 - 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

# How-To:

01 - Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
02 - Unroll both sheets of puff pastry. Spread Nutella evenly over one sheet, leaving a 0.4-inch border around the edges.
03 - Place the second sheet of pastry over the Nutella-covered sheet to create a sandwich.
04 - Cut out Christmas tree shapes approximately 5–6 inches tall using a sharp knife or tree-shaped cookie cutter. Re-roll scraps to form additional trees.
05 - Transfer the trees to the prepared tray. Make horizontal cuts on both sides of each tree, leaving the center trunk intact. Twist each branch gently for a decorative effect.
06 - Brush each tree with beaten egg to promote browning and shine.
07 - Bake for 16–18 minutes until puffed, golden, and crisp.
08 - Allow to cool briefly, then dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm or at room temperature.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • They look fancy enough to impress guests, but honestly take less time than wrapping presents.
  • The contrast between crispy pastry and creamy Nutella is genuinely hard to stop eating once you start.
  • Kids and adults both get excited about something shaped like a tree—it's festive without being fussy.
02 -
  • If your Nutella is too thick, it'll bunch up and create an uneven layer—a few seconds in the microwave makes it spreadable without turning it into a puddle.
  • Don't skip the egg wash; it's the difference between pale pastry and that restaurant-quality golden brown that makes people assume you went to culinary school.
03 -
  • Keep your pastry cold until the last moment—warm pastry is harder to cut cleanly and won't puff as dramatically in the oven.
  • If you're making multiple batches, bake them in the middle rack of your oven where heat circulates evenly, and rotate the tray halfway through if your oven has hot spots.
